Bangkok: A City of Contrasts, Calm and Chaos

Bangkok is a city that never truly slows down.

A place where ancient temples sit beneath glass skyscrapers, where incense drifts through busy streets filled with tuk-tuks and street food stalls, and where moments of serenity can be found hidden amongst the chaos.

After arriving in Thailand, Bangkok was our first introduction to Southeast Asia. Hot, vibrant and endlessly energetic, it is a place of contrasts; from golden temples and quiet river views to neon-lit streets and rooftop bars suspended high above the city.

Serenity Above The City: INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok

Poised high above the energy of Bangkok, INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok offers a sense of escape from the city below.

Thirty-four stories above the streets, the hotel feels like a sanctuary in the sky, as luxe, airy interiors meet floor-to-ceiling windows, providing uninterrupted views across the city's ever-changing skyline.

The bedrooms embrace a sense of calm, with soft textures, contemporary design and large, billowy beds that offer the perfect retreat after a day of exploring.

But it is the rooftop experience that truly makes this hotel memorable. The 34th-floor infinity pool is quite something, with its transparent floor offering glimpses down towards the bar below. Beside it, the Giant Swing Pool Bar takes inspiration from Bangkok's famous Giant Swing — the striking red landmark found in the historic heart of the city.

At the bar, warm and courteous hospitality meets an impressive setting. Sip ice-cold cocktails amid the glow of the city lights, surrounded by thoughtful design details, including the mesmerising reflections of the pool above, which shimmer across the bar below.

Higher still, the infinity pool offers panoramic views stretching towards the horizon. During the day, the terrace feels effortlessly peaceful; a place to escape the heat and watch the city buzz below.

As dusk falls and the skyline begins to sparkle, the rooftop takes on a more vibrant energy, offering a little taste of somewhere even more exotic. Bangkok is known locally as 'Krung Thep', meaning “City of Angels”... a name that feels particularly apt when viewed from high in the sky.

Golden Hour at Wat Arun

Standing proudly along the Chao Phraya River, the Temple of Dawn is one of Thailand's most recognisable landmarks.

Dating back to the Ayutthaya period, the temple was restored and expanded during the reign of King Taksin and later became one of the most important temples of the early Bangkok era. Its towering central prang (spire), rising over 70 metres high, is decorated with thousands of pieces of colourful porcelain and seashells, creating the intricate mosaic effect that makes it so distinctive.

The temple’s name comes from Aruna, the Hindu god of dawn, and while sunrise is traditionally associated with its name, we found it just as magical as the day began to fade. One of the best ways to arrive is by river boat - a journey that feels like part of the experience itself - as crossing the Chao Phraya River offers a beautiful introduction to one of Bangkok’s most treasured sights.

Tip: make sure you have some coins with you for the river boat fare. The crossing is simple and inexpensive, but you will definitely need small change to board.

A Taste of Bangkok: The Family

Bangkok’s food scene is one of the city’s greatest pleasures. But among the countless restaurants, bustling markets and street food stalls, one of our most memorable experiences came from a small canal-side restaurant, The Family.

Perfect because of its simple menu, friendly staff and beautiful setting beside the water, it captured the kind of dining experiences we loved most throughout Thailand — places that feel personal, relaxed and rooted in their surroundings.

Away from the busy streets of Bangkok, sitting beside the canal with great food and warm hospitality felt like a small moment of calm amongst the chaos of the city.

Bangkok After Dark: Leela Rooftop Bar and Bistro

Set high above the city, Leela Bar was cool, casual and full of charm, boasting metropolitan views and a distinctly Bangkok experience.

Leaving Bangkok

Bangkok was the perfect introduction to Thailand.

From there, we headed south towards Krabi, Koh Lanta, Ao Nang and Phuket — swapping rooftop views and busy streets for turquoise waters, limestone cliffs and afternoons on the beach.
